Winner, Winner, Chicken Dinner.....Despite A Draw
The B team travelled back to The Castle Vale stadium, where until now had brought a number of joyful games in terms of results and performances against other Midlands teams. They hoped today would prove as fruitful, but knew from their previous 1-0 victory over the opposition that they were in for a fight.
Gloucester started the brighter of the two teams showing some lovely quick football to move through the home team. Fisher hit the post and then saw a shot soon after well saved by the keeper, but it was another fluent attack that opened the scoreline. One-twos on the right with Fisher and Bee led the former to give the ball to Jones in the middle. His pass to the left to Werner saw his shot saved only for the rebound to hit Jones and go in.
Villiers then had a couple of chances for himself - including a shot well saved after some good footwork from Werner and Jones had further efforts that came close, until Bee, who was having a fine game on the right, dribbled past a number of defenders, gave the ball to Villiers whose great turn and neat finish doubled the lead.
Gloucester continued to press the home team and created a number of great opportunities - those falling to Bee, Kennedy, Mulraney, Taylor and Villiers but failed to extend their lead. A sense of complacency seemed to be settling in towards the end of the second-third, but Sutton Coldfield had been kept out by some great defending from Mason, shots over the bar and superb saves from Boakes.
Sadly, the pressure soon became too much and two late goals from the home team, both having fortunate rebounds off Gloucester defenders meant that the game finished level when perhaps Gloucester should've found themselves four or five ahead before the hosts replied.
The draw however has pleasing results - meaning that we’ve won the Midland Challenge Trophy League with one game to spare (check out 'Regional Comps' on the web site at http://www.gpsfa.com/cups/regional-competitons). Well done gentlemen - you thoroughly deserve it after some of the performances against the Midlands teams this season.
