Lee Who?

How old do you think I look? Harris yet again enquired during the Curry Night on the Monday. Still worried by being prematurely aged last week, he asked people until the overly kind McDonalds’ eventually gave a reply he was happy with. Pleased with himself he wondered off to give abuse to some unfortunate person. Ross McLarney was in his sights. The McDonalds’ were then heard saying “Well you have to nice to people don’t you”. McLarney did deserve some stick though as he insisted on being served an off-menu dish, a menu that was thoroughly enjoyed by all the other guests. He delighted in showing off his extra feeble Korma to all, completely ruining the GPSFA’s ( in reality Owen and Wilson) hard earned reputation as fiery hot curry eaters. A great night that raised lots of money towards the tour funds and gave some a night’s pass away from the stresses and strains of family life (in reality just Mason Senior).

Harris informed Owen and Wixey that he had had a growth on his chest lanced in the week. He received the usual sympathy and concern, they took the mickey and gave him a new nickname in honour of his new third nipple, Scaramanga from the James Bond film The Man with the Golden Gun.

Wixey arrived early for The Anglo Welsh Conference match against Newport in order to help set up the Longlevens stadium only to find once again that the fairies, elves and sprites had once again beaten him to it. Owen, Foran, Roberts and Stalley just happened to be there.

Wixey was desperate for a win, not just to please the boys, or advance our chances in winning the conference, or develop the boys’ skills, but actually to ensure that his co-coach Harris is not able to continually mention the game we lost when he was not there!

Wixey hoped that the reset attitude displayed in Friday’s training session would be carried forward to the following day’s game. The boys did not disappoint.

A very competitive and entertaining game ensued. Neither side could gain any advantage in the first twenty minutes as the home side enjoyed more possession but the visitors created the greater number of shooting opportunities. The deadlock was broken when a sweetly struck Mulraney freekick from the apex of the angle of the penalty area was glanced home from the head of Jones. A few minutes later Jones was fouled in the area and Fisher slotted the resultant penalty away with aplomb. Boakes saved well at the feet of a Newport striker and was thankful another strike flew over the bar as the away side looked to reduce the arrears.

Gloucester knew they would still need to improve on their very good first half display if they were to see the game through with a victory. They began the second half in a determined fashion, epitomised by the industrious Kennedy who gained reward for his efforts when he finished off a mazy crossfield run with a strike into the top corner of the goal. With the whole team playing well Gloucester had their most dominant spell of the game with Fisher, Mulraney and Kennedy at the heart of everything that was good. A neat run down the right and pass in to Fisher by Bee enabled the striker to rifle in the fourth goal. A fifth soon followed, Fisher capping a fine individual display with a hat-trick goal, this time a low drive into the bottom corner after good work by Bee and Kennedy. Mason, Ball and Werner continued to snuff out any dangers in defence with fine performances while Villiers and Bee worked hard on the flanks. Newport completed the scoring. A very competitive and technically strong Newport side deserved more from the game than the five-one defeat they received but this was Gloucester’s day and was a great response to last week’s disappointing performance at Stevenage.

A common retort that was heard post match was “Lee who? Some even said they were going to book him as photographer for as many Saturdays as they could.

The Best You Can Be

In Friday’s training session, the players were challenged to be the best they can be. On this showing, a few have made a great start and will now have to raise the bar even further while others followed their pre-match instructions to the letter. I am really looking forward to working with boys next week on setting their targets due to their great response this week.
