Gloucester B 5 St Albans B 2 by Uncle Quentin
Another bright sunny day greeted visitors St Albans to play their representative fixture at Longlevens.
The hosts began well, with the first strike on goal coming after five minutes when Knight drove a shot from twenty yards just over the bar. The away side responded well and pressurised the Gloucester goal, but were not able to fashion any clear cut opportunities.
Nine minutes in, Weatherley showed great agility to fire the home side in front, stretching to volley in after good work from Mason and Sutherland. The Saints equalised and then took the lead through two similar goals. Wilson found himself in space on the edge of the area and coolly slotted home with Taylor adding a very similar second – the two strikes being just minutes apart.
Centre back Pinkney then regained parity with the goal of the day, hammering home from 20 yards, giving the 'keeper no chance to save. Balkwill saved well from Sanders’ long range effort before Collins and Weatherley combined to set up Sutherland and he clipped the ball over the advancing 'keeper to put the hosts in front just before half time.
Gloucester produced a stronger and more cohesive display in the second half and dominated the play from then on. Sallis, Pinkney, Elliott and the impressive Collins made sure the visitors’ opportunities were limited while Weatherley, Williams and Knight controlled the midfield, allowing Mason, Butcher and Sutherland to push St Albans back and create a number of chances.
It was hard work by Butcher and then Sutherland that enabled the home side to extend their lead. Both chased down a back pass and attempted clearance and Sutherland scored his second goal of the game from close range. Sutherland completed his hat-trick and capped a fine display when he swept in following Knight's run and right wing cross. A good second half team effort enabled the Yellows to run out winners by five goals to two.
