Erdington and Saltley 9-2 Gloucester B by Sacked in the Morning
Erdington and Saltley were every bit as good as the scoreline suggests and the Gloucester boys did well to stay in the game for so long.
The home side started in great fashion and scored two goals in the first two minutes. The city team slowly got into their stride and began to compete with the very slick Midlanders, but struggled to match their physicality. Weatherley however, nipped in to flick a long Collins free kick around the ‘keeper to reduce the arrears before Balkwill did well to get down to a low drive destined for the corner of the net.
Erdington then racked up six goals without reply and were completely dominant, but to their credit the Gloucester team never stopped trying and continued to keep doing their best. Pinkney and Mason competed physically, while Butcher, Weatherley and Sutherland never stopped running and battling. Balkwill made a number of good saves, while Collins, Knight and Williams worked hard to stem the tide. Elliott had a great game at left back and took it upon himself to make sure that the home side’s speedy and skilful winger knew he had met his match.
Knight fired in a penalty for the visitors in the dying minutes, only for Erdington to re-establish their seven goal advantage before the close.
Today was one of those days when you just have to hold your hands up and say they were better than us. The Gloucester players can be proud of the fact that they never let their heads drop and battled on right to the final whistle against the best side they have encountered this season.
