Wolverhampton 1 Gloucester 2 by Cricht On Time

Gloucester Schools’ A Squad travelled north to the Black Country, registering their first victory of the campaign with a hard-fought victory against Wolverhampton at Wednesfield.

The hosts opened the game with pace, Kebaya and Bailey each looking dangerous and both Collins and Hylton were called into early action to snuff out efforts from the dangerous front pair.

On their first real foray forward however, the visitors claimed the lead – Jenner’s pressing forcing the ball to run loose and skipper Roddis driving beyond Pearson and into the top corner – a fine strike from a fine player.

Troke then saved well at close range from Bailey, before Hague’s left wing cross deflected in to level the scores.

This though led to Gloucester’s best period of the game with Roddis and Richards in centre midfield and Coldridge, Elliott and latterly Weatherley on the flanks looking to get at the Wolves defence. A Richards corner was defected onto the outside of the post and a fine pass from Richards and an equally fine cross from Coldridge set up Jenner whose effort was well blocked by Maginnis.

Undaunted, the city side continued to battle away and retook the lead when Jenner picked up the ball on the edge of the box before netting with a fine drive into the far corner.

Jenner drew another fine block from Maginnis after being set up by Richards as the city team reached the interval a goal to the good.

Wolves opened the second half as they had begun the first and Troke was forced into an early save low to his left from Yates.

With most of the game being played in the Gloucester half, the impressive Collins blocked, headed and intercepted the Midlanders’ attacks and he was well supported by fellow backliners Hylton, Townsend and Elliott.

Coldridge meanwhile was putting in a real shift on the left side of midfield, supporting the attack whenever possible while retreating into some fine defensive positions when the hosts were in possession.

With Roddis, Richards and Weatherley being forced ever deeper, Jenner worked hard to relieve the pressure with the limited ball he received and during the final ten minutes Townsend, moved up front, did the same.

Troke saved well once more to his left from Kebaya, then confidently fielded a long range effort from Davis, while Hylton brought about a fine last ditch tackle to deny Bailey a shooting opportunity.

Richards and Jenner were each forced to retire temporarily from the fray after making brave interceptions and physiotherapist Gore was kept busy during his competitive debut.

But despite being under pressure for the vast majority of the second half Gloucester held on to register a hard-won victory. Well done to all the players who competed extremely well and displayed great determination throughout to notch their first win of the campaign.
