Woking A 0 Gloucester A 4 by H.G.Wells

Gloucester’s A Squad maintained the B Squad’s good work of the previous hour by recording a well-earned Cotswold League victory over their Woking counterparts.

Pledger gave Jenner an early opportunity which was saved at the near post by Rush, but for the next five minutes it was all Woking, Wilcock’s free kick being held by Balkwill who then did well to tip a second free kick from the same player over the bar.

From the resulting corner, Marchant’s effort struck the post as the hosts were unfortunate not to claim an early lead, though the decisive moment came at the other end when good work from Coldridge and Roddis set up Gore, whose drive from the edge of the box was too hot for Rush – 1-0.

The keeper then saved well from Pledger, but three minutes before the break the city side extended their lead. Smart play from Jenner, Roddis and Gore helped force a corner and from Pledger’s pinpoint delivery, a combination of Roddis and Woking defender saw the ball nestle in the bottom corner.

Weir-Roberts, Richards and Hylton had combined well in the city backline during the first period and their positive approach continued after the break, though it was Gloucester that completely dominated the opening ten minutes of the second period.

Pledger, playing on the left side of midfield was instrumental in many of the visitors’ attacks and it was from his pass that Gore brought a fine save from the keeper before Pledger and Gore combined well, the Woking defence just clearing the former’s fine cross on this occasion.

A searching pass from Hylton saw Pledger fire just wide, while Gore’s free kick was easily taken by the keeper. Hylton and Weir-Roberts each brought about timely interceptions as Woking looked to break, but Gloucester grabbed a deserved third when the lively Roddis volleyed home left footed from Pledger’s corner kick.

Griffiths went close for the hosts when his effort struck the city upright, but back came Gloucester, Jenner’s effort from Gore’s pass being tipped round the post and from the resulting corner Jenner turned the ball against the Surrey side’s crossbar.

A lovely chip from Jenner found Coldridge in a great position but the midfielder’s header went too high, though two minutes later another Pledger flag kick was converted by Gore for number four.

There was still time for the impressive Balkwill to make it a pair of clean sheets by claiming a Barron free kick and completing a good day at the office for all concerned.

Gloucester: Balkwill; Weir-Roberts, Richards, Hylton; Coldridge, Roddis, Gore, Pledger; Jenner.
