Swindon 1 - 3 Gloucester

Gloucester’s A Squad took the Southern Counties League points at Ballard’s Ash as the city side ran out deserved 3-1 winners against Swindon.

The visitors began well with Townsend, Gore, Coldridge and Pledger having the better of the midfield tussle with Gore twice testing Boswell with well struck efforts, but the home custodian was equal to the threat on both occasions.

The breakthrough though arrived on twelve minutes when Coldridge played in Jenner who finished confidently. Coldridge then saw the woodwork deny him his first goal of the campaign, his well struck drive from the edge of the box cannoning back off the crossbar.

Gore then almost played in Jenner but the excellent Oram pulled off a fine interception, while the same player saw another well struck effort taken by Boswell. The keeper then did even better to thwart Coldridge from close range after Jenner had caused problems in the home defence, before the city striker did well to fire in a great cross, but Pledger’s effort at the far post went the wrong side of the upright.

A brief spell of Swindon pressure in the minutes leading up to half time brought Richards, Weir-Roberts and Hylton into action and it was Hylton’s excellent clearing header following Beale’s right wing corner that brought the half to a close.

Gloucester extended their advantage five minutes after the break when the visitors defended a Newcombe free kick and from the resulting clearance Hylton played in Jenner, the centre forward rolling home his 14th score of the campaign.

Gore then went close when his free kick was cleared off the line at the far post by Ritchings, while the influential Townsend saw his effort neatly saved by Boswell.

Newcombe drove just wide for Swindon, but two minutes later the hosts reduced the arrears when Shedden fired home off the underside of the bar from eight yards.

Within four minutes however, Gloucester had restored their two-goal cushion, more good work from Jenner, down the left on this occasion, giving Coldridge the opportunity to net his first of the season at the back post.

With Hylton, Richards and Weir-Roberts dealing capably with Swindon’s breakaways, Troke was only brought into action on a single second half occasion. In the dying minutes Jenner drove left footed just wide of the far post and Coldridge saw his effort fly past the opposite upright after being set up by Gore’s fine pass as Gloucester finished strongly to pick up a well earned victory.

Gloucester: Troke; Weir-Roberts, Richards, Hylton; Coldridge, Gore, Townsend, Pledger; Jenner.
