Gloucester A 5-0 Swindon by Uncle Quentin

Gloucester’s A Squad kicked off their 2016 home fixtures with victory over a Swindon side that performed far better than the eventual scoreline suggests.

The hosts got off to the best possible start, Townsend and Coldridge combining to play in Pledger who thundered a drive into the top corner with just 58 seconds on the clock.

Shedden struck the outside of the post as Swindon responded, but it was the city side that extended their lead in the 13th minute, Coldridge providing a second assist and Jenner the left footed finish.

Roddis went close with virtually the first touch of his return to action following an injury lay-off and Weir-Roberts saw his effort taken by Boswell, but it was the visitors that came closest to finding the net, Wiles being denied at point blank range by first Coldridge and then Troke before Newcombe headed the third attempt just wide.

On the stroke of half time Oram denied Jenner with a great saving tackle, Gore having provided the defence-splitting pass and within two minutes of the restart Swindon came within inches of reducing the deficit, Newcombe striking the underside of the bar, but both the Russian linesman and Tuffley referee remained unmoved.

Jenner then saw his effort brilliantly saved by Boswell following another Gore pass, Pledger firing the rebound just over, while Gore’s drive was also saved following a Pledger assist.

With the game swinging from end to end, Richards returned to his usual composed self, while Hylton and Weir-Roberts remained solid at the back as well as providing good attacking support to the hosts’ midfield. It was Swindon though that went close once more, Racey’s fine right wing cross was met by Wiles’ equally fine header, with Troke producing an equally fine close range save.

The final ten minutes however belonged to Gloucester and they extended their lead in the 50th minute, Townsend feeding Gore whose drive was saved by Boswell, only for the alert Jenner to follow up and convert the rebound.

Boswell continued to thwart the Gloucester offensive, saving well from both Jenner and Townsend before Roddis set up Townsend who this time converted the city team’s fourth with some style. Coldridge then completed a hat trick of assists, laying off neatly to Gore who added number five and just to illustrate the openness of the game and the second period in particular, both goalkeepers were forced into saves in the final ninety seconds.

Gloucester A: Troke; Weir-Roberts, Richards, Hylton; Coldridge, Gore, Townsend, Pledger; Jenner. Sub: Roddis.
