Gloucester A 3 Vs 6 Potters Bar
Two goals in the final five minutes gave the scoreline a somewhat lop-sided look as Gloucester finally succumbed to league leaders Potters Bar, but only after an almighty effort by the hosts who had led 2-0 and 3-2 against a team that had beaten them heavily on the opening day of the campaign.
The homesters began well and Roddis almost played in Jenner early on, only for the striker to be denied by a fine last-ditch tackle from Barker, while at the other end Hummel went close for the visitors.
The city backline of Weir-Roberts, Richards and Hylton coped well with the quick-passing Londoners’ early forays but it was Gloucester that drew first blood, Roddis making space for himself before driving home his sixth score of the season from just outside the box.
Four minutes later the hosts doubled their advantage after a foul on Jenner. Pledger swung a perfectly weighted free kick into the back post and Jenner converted from close range.
The visitors responded with a free kick of their own ten minutes before the break after Johnson was upended, Gibbs finding the top far corner with aplomb.
Townsend, Roddis, Coldridge and Gore were working tremendously hard in the home midfield and a jinking run and shot from Roddis was equalled by a confident save from Telfer. Four minutes before the interval though Bar were level, Hummel going past three players to find the bottom corner to complete a fine individual strike.
Gloucester came out for the second half confident of causing more problems for the visiting defence and almost went ahead when Roddis played in Jenner who was denied by an excellent save low to his right by Telfer.
The keeper then fielded a free kick from Richards who turned in another excellent all-round performance for the city team, while Telfer was again to the fore as the combative Townsend fed the ever-dangerous Jenner who was again denied by the Bar keeper.
The Gloucester striker was not to be thwarted a third time however as he confidently steered home to put the homesters ahead, Roddis having added to his growing list of assists.
Potters Bar were level five minutes later however when the city team failed to clear and Hummel converted from eight yards. A fine tackle from skipper Pledger denied Gibbs, but soon afterwards another loose ball following a Gibbs free kick was stabbed home by Young to put the visitors ahead for the first time.
Back came Gloucester and a great crossfield pass from Gore found Coldridge who enjoyed a fruitful morning down the right and from his cross Jenner was inches away from bringing his team level.
With four minutes to go however Bar were awarded a penalty which was converted by Gibbs despite the best efforts of Troke in the home goal and with the last kick of the game Georgiou found the bottom corner to complete the scoring.
