Woking A 2-1 Gloucester A
Gloucester’s A Squad was edged out of the Shires Cup by the odd goal in three, but they put in a much improved display against Woking at Knaphill.
In front of a sparse crowd, the city team battled hard from the kick off, but after having had slightly the better of the opening eight minutes they conceded a penalty after a foul on Campbell, Davies emphatically converting the resulting spot kick.
Campbell almost added a second but Moroney was quickly off his line to deny the livewire forward, though with Liggett and Jones each performing well in central midfield, the visitors gave as good as they got. The difference in striking quality of the two teams though was emphasised when Davies drove fractionally wide for the hosts, while Gloucester won three free kicks in good areas, but failed to seriously trouble the keeper from any of them.
Two minutes before half time Woking doubled their advantage following a right wing corner, Campbell losing his marker to head home and right on the whistle Jones bravely blocked O’Neil’s effort to prevent a third.
Gloucester maintained their committed approach after the break and with Mclean and Lawson in fine form at the back, Woking only created two second half opportunities, Pye driving just wide and Moroney doing well to turn Christian’s long range effort over the bar.
Offensively, Blacker’s switch to right midfield bolstered the city attacking threat and with Liggett and Jones both continuing to compete well in the centre, Gloucester remained in the game. With seven minutes remaining their perseverance brought its reward, Chamberlain driving forward before dispatching a fine effort from fully 25 yards into the top corner.
The city side, sensing an equaliser continued to push forward, winning three successive corners, but despite a fine delivery from Lawson on each occasion, the Woking defence managed to scramble the ball away.
In the final minute Gloucester won a free kick on the left. Any touch on Blacker’s delivery would have levelled the scores, but Hill gathered well and the victory was Woking’s.
