All Things Bright and Beautiful

The Chairman made good on his promise to be more visible at every home game from now on. He looked great in his new very bright orange high visibility jacket. So bright in fact that it shamed the sun into putting in an appearance and bathe Longlevens in warm sunshine for the morning. This enhanced the warm welcome given to Caerphilly on their first visit to Gloucester.

In tune with the day, Gloucester started brightly and began creating opportunities. Fisher saw his shot turned round the post by the ‘keeper and then the striker unusually missed his next attempt, enabling the visitors to clear off the line.

Caerphilly’s passing game gradually kicked into life and they pressed with real purpose. Two attacks down their right created problems for the host’s backline, Boakes saving the first and their striker heading just passed the post with the second. With the game flowing end to end, Gloucester took the lead through Taylor. Having just been moved back into defence, he picked the ball up near the half way line and moved forward without being challenged and unleashed a long-range effort that bounced past the ‘keeper’s despairing dive; the Welsh side unlucky to be going into the break behind having played some very attractive football.

The second half ebbed and flowed just like the first, but with both sides increasing their effort making for an entertaining and exciting game. Caerphilly continued to play the better football but the home side showing the greater desire. A Fisher corner was met by Mulraney, his header rebounding off the bar. Villiers nearly increased the lead when he pounced on a goal kick but he poked the ball past the ‘keeper only to see it cleared at the foot of the post. Bee, who was having a strong game on the wing, got himself into a great position but for some reason tried to pass instead of shooting, allowing the chance to disappear.

The visitors created numerous chances of their own, but Boakes and the Gloucester defence of Mason, Ball and Taylor stood firm. Jones, Werner and Fisher moved the ball well in midfield and were also strong in the challenge as they matched their counterparts. Werner capitalized on one swift move by cutting in from the left, meandering past two defenders and firing into the far bottom corner to give the Yellows a slightly flattering, but welcome two goal advantage. The very lively Villiers hit the post with another half-chance before the Welshmen peppered the Gloucester goal with a late flurry but could not apply the finishing touch to their good approach play, the hosts holding out for a hard earned two-nil victory.
