A Grand Day Out
Newbury away always promised to a good challenging game but neither coach expected the day to be one of the nicest trips of the season.
Although it was great to see Ball back, he had obviously read the invite wrong and came in fancy dress. His Chav costume was superb and he really looked the part. Villiers used the time while we waited for the late Masons’ to arrive, by taking the mickey out of coach Harris. A substitute spot was beckoning for the young man. The Masons’ excuses for their late arrival was not believed but the offer of chocolate for the coaches was immediately accepted and the matter closed. Finally, we were off.
Villiers used the journey to turn himself into a permanent substitute by verbally abusing both coaches this time. Mason has a go at ordering a Subway at the services but leaves the assistant perplexed as has no idea that he has to choose what goes in it. Eventually he blurts out chicken. He gets something with some kind of chicken in. Nobody really knows what was actually in it. An amazing thing happened, Taylor actually noticed Kennedy had left his wallet on the counter and retrieved it so he does not lose it. Wixey holds on to it while Kennedy is forced to ask at the counter if they had seen it. After an extensive search the wallet is returned. Taylor is pleased with himself. Mason buys crème eggs for the coaches. His lateness completely forgotten. The coaches decide tell the boys they have won the Geoff Richards League. Their delight is evident and continues through onto the minibus where Taylor removes his shirt and sits there bare-chested twirling his shirt around his head. Definitely the best services stop this season.
The game itself is physically demanding as is the sloping and bobbly pitch. Newbury were keen to reverse the result earlier in the season when they were surprised by the quality of the Gloucester B side and were knocked out of the cup. Gloucester were also keen to show that that was no fluke and a very competitive encounter resulted.
The visitors strike first. Fisher pouncing to steer the ball home following a Taylor corner. Werner continued to personal quest to shoot as many times as possible from outside the box but unfortunately for him this effort is well saved. From the resultant corner Kennedy heads what looks like a certain goal but yet again the ‘keeper does well to save it. Boakes is out smartly to save at the feet of the striker as Newbury begin to exert some pressure on the Gloucester goal. A corner is not cleared even though multiple opportunities are given and the melee is finally ended when Newbury fire in to equalise. A double save from Boakes prevents the homeside from going in at the break in front.
Newbury took the lead early in the second half when a through ball evaded the defence and their striker ran on to it and neatly slid the ball past Boakes. Gloucester searched for an equaliser with Fisher, Villiers and Werner at the centre of most of the attacks while Mason and Taylor covered well at the back. The yellows gained a deserved equaliser when Villiers latched on to a neat piece of play from Fisher to turn and drive through the Newbury defence before slotting the ball past the outcoming ‘keeper to cap a fine individual performance for the striker.
A two all draw a fitting result for two evenly matched sides who played the game in a spirited manner throughout.

Kennedy had so much he was barely able to fist bump the coaches. Unfortunately Taylor reverted to type right at the very end and left his skin and jumper on the minibus.
