Gloucester A 1 Wycombe 2 by Ian Dury
Gloucester’s A Squad slipped to a narrow defeat against Wycombe in their opening Southern Counties League fixture at Longlevens.
The home side fell behind after only six minutes, bizarrely following a corner of their own. An attempted short spot kick was intercepted, Leek broke quickly and fed Joshua-McCarty who finished with aplomb.
Hylton and Pledger each intercepted dangerous Wycombe attacks and Troke saved from Stenning, while Jenner drew an excellent tackle from Holmes at the other end.
Richards went close to an equaliser after good interplay with Gore, but his effort was saved at the near post, while Gore himself played in a fine ball to the back post, though no-one was on hand to take advantage of the opportunity. Gloucester maintained their forward momentum with Richards, Townsend, Roddis and Gore combining well in midfield and Hylton firing just wide, while Roddis went close after a fine run and shot, but the visitors held on to their lead until the break.
Four minutes after the interval however Brown was afforded far too much space in the box to convert from eight yards, but midway through the second period the city side reduced the arrears when Roddis headed home his first goal of the season from Richards’ right wing corner.
With Coldridge returning to the fray Gloucester continued to work hard in their quest for an equaliser, but Wycombe defended well and almost added a third when Pullan’s free kick was well held by Troke who looked confident throughout.
Gloucester: Troke; Weir-Roberts, Pledger, Hylton; Coldridge, Gore, Roddis, Townsend; Jenner. Sub: Richards.
